O2 UK Enablers FAQ's

Q: What are O2 Enablers?

A: "Enabler" is our jargon free name for an API, which stands for Application Programming Interface. In simple terms these Enablers provide access to features of the O2 UK network and infrastructure in a secure and managed way.

Think of Enablers like "plugs" into the O2 UK network. With your permission, App Developers can use these Enablers to retrieve information that helps them to make more compelling services that are tailored to you.

Q: What kind of information can Developers retrieve from these Enablers?

A: O2 Litmus provides a selection of Enablers to Developers. The types of information an app could retrieve to customise the experience to you is listed below, including examples uses of that information:

Your Location An app to inform you of road traffic congestion in your current area.
Your Handset Make and Model Ensure you have downloaded the right version of the app for your handset
Your Handsets technical specification Allow the app to customise itself to your handset e.g. screen size
Your current connection speed on the O2 network, e.g. 3G Allows the app to optimise the resolution of images and video clips
Check if you have a mobile data Bolt On configured on your account Allows the app to check if you have unlimited data usage configured on your account, thus helping you avoid any unexpected charges.
Check if you have particular services provisioned on your account Allows the app to check and avoid using services that you may not have access to. Examples include using mobile internet services, using your phone whilst abroad or paying for content services via premium rate text messages.

Note: Developers can only retrieve information about you and / or your device if you grant them permission, so you are in full control of the information you choose to disclose about yourself.

Q: What if I'm not comfortable with a Developer checking this information?

A: Protection of your data is a key principle of O2 Litmus. Your information is not accessible by any app or Developer within O2 Litmus until you specifically grant permission, so you are in full control of the information you choose to disclose about yourself.

Before you commit to downloading an app that uses Enablers you will be informed which ones the app is using. You will need to tick the box to grant permission for those Enablers to retrieve the relevant information from your account.

If you are not comfortable with providing this permission for what ever reason, simply navigate away from the app download page to cancel the process.

Also note permission is granted on an app by app basis, so if you grant permission, you are only granting permission to that individual app – no other app’s or Developers will be able to access your information without your additional approval.
